Fiona Kolontari

Fiona has worked in the field of disability support for over 20 years, in a variety of roles in compulsory education, voluntary sector and higher education. She currently works as Specialist Tutor (Dyslexia / Neurodiversity) at the University of Wolverhampton, delivering individually tailored study skills programmes for students with specific learning differences (SpLD) and autism spectrum conditions. She has a PG Cert in SpLD (FE/HE) with BDA approved teacher status and a PG Cert Academic Practice. She teaches and supports students across all subjects and faculties, at levels 3-8, has been in post since 2014. Prior to this, she worked in a similar role at Harper Adams University for two years.

As a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Fiona has developed successful initiatives designed to embed inclusive teaching and learning within the wider University, as well as training staff in disability awareness, inclusive curriculum design and assistive technologies. She holds a SEDA qualification in Leading and Embedding Technology-Enhanced Learning and is also a member of the British Education Studies Association.

Fiona is actively involved in the development of Equality and Diversity strategy within University of Wolverhampton and authored the sections of our Race Equality Charter that relate to intersectionality, having designed and implemented actions to improve the student experience for international disabled students. As both a member of the Disabled Staff Network and a disabled postgraduate student, she has influenced colleagues to ensure Wolverhampton takes an affirmation approach, where disability is anticipated and difference is valued. Fiona is also a member of the University’s Quality Panel, and a member of the Academic Board, ensuring inclusion is at the heart of the curricula and processes.

Outside of work, Fiona volunteers as a SEN Link Governor at a small rural primary school, she is an active member of Curriculum, Finance and Pupil Welfare committees. Prior to working in HE, Fiona worked with young people aged 3-18 in schools and colleges as an Educational Integrator, mainly working with teenagers with sensory impairments, and also worked as a freelance artist for a number of Disability Arts charities, galleries and hospitals; She specialised in working with young people with complex disabilities and degenerative health conditions, and looked after children / care leavers.

In October 2019, Fiona participated in the Disabled Students’ Enquiry in Parliament, which gave her a thirst to use her professional skills and personal experience, to shape strategy outside of her organisation and strives to level the playing field for students with disabilities.
