Steven Watson

Steven Watson, an Associate Professor at the University of Cambridge’s Faculty of Education, employs a multidisciplinary approach in his research, integrating sociology, philosophy, psychology, mathematics, and engineering. His research in social systems theory examines complex educational and societal issues, viewing entities as systems interacting with their environment. This includes a wide range of systems, from individuals to political structures, all operationally distinct yet environmentally connected. He explores self-referential, operationally closed but thermodynamically open systems (autopoiesis), focusing on their evolving structural relationships. His current focus is on AI’s impact on education and society, treating generative AI as an autopoietic system, a mediator between individuals and society, emphasizing AI’s role within a broader interconnected system. He holds degrees in engineering and educational studies from institutions including the University of Cambridge, the Open University, and the University of Nottingham. He also holds a Postgraduate Certificate of Education from the University of Sheffield, granting him qualified teacher status.
