Inclusive Course Design and Delivery: Influencing higher education policy and best practice

Many conferences and events, including our own, have looked at examples of good practice in inclusivity.

We have seen some great ideas and practices in a variety of higher education institutions but how do we influence our own institution to adopt good practices? What do we need to assist us in such a challenge?

The aim of this one-day event was twofold:

1) to update you on the latest initiatives in this field both in the UK and across Europe and provide you with the knowledge and practical tools to assist you to challenge and change the everyday working methods at your institution.

2) to discuss and move forward the development of an NADP hosted, dynamic and organic repository for Inclusive Practice resources for use in the HE sector

We were honoured to welcome Kjetil Andreas Knarlag and Elinor Jeanette Olaussen from Universell (National Coordinator of Accessibility of Higher Education in Norway), to present for the first time in the UK, the findings from their 2yr Erasmus+ project “Universal Design for Learning – License to Learn“. Their research drew on the experience of policy-makers, academic staff, student support staff and students across Europe.

We were also fortunate to have Professor Sue Rigby, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Student Development at the University of Lincoln, and Chair of the Inclusive Practice Sub-Group of the Disabled Students Sector Leadership Group (DSSLG). Sue informed delegates about the work of both groups up to now and plans for the future.

The workshop session built on the gains from the morning sessions, and started work on our AGM commitment to develop “an inclusive practice discussion board and toolkit for practitioners to act as a depository for sharing policies, case studies, practices, templates etc.”

Thank you

Many thanks to all those who attended the NADP Heads of Service Event. We hope that your enjoyed the day and that you have taken away some valuable information to use at your institutions. Certificates of attendance have already been sent to delegates and all members can access slides from the Members’ Area > Resources > Conference Presentations.
