Publications by NADP Members

Fraser, Kym (ed). Education Development and Leadership in Higher Education.

NADO member Ellen Sanders, Disability Policy Adviser at the University of Nottingham, co-authored the chapter 'Educating University Teachers: Participation and access issues for students who have a disability', which is summarised in the latest issue of HEFCE's publication INCLUSION Autumn 2005 (PDF) on page 19.

The chapter compares the DDA as it affects HEIs in Australia and the UK followed by a case study of a module developed for PGCHE students which enabled academics and students to work closely together. This programme allowed the academics to understand why reasonable adjustments were needed and support services available to assist both them and the student. Peer review was built in so the academics then also learnt about implications of other disabilities.

The book can be bought from Taylor & Francis Books

Viney, Deborah. Systems for supporting people with neurological dysfunction in HE.

Journal article in International Journal of Therapy & Rehabilitation, Vol. 10, No. 11, 01 Nov 2003, pp.519-523.

The focus of this article is support for students with neurological dysfunction in higher education. The University of Southampton's disability service and the students it supports are used as an example to demonstrate some of the possibilities. An indication of the number of people with neurological impairment at the University is provided, as well as some suggestions for ways in which applicants may best be supported. There is also a brief description of the Disabled Students' Allowances, detailing their purpose and application, and information on the systems that may be used to support academic activities, which include equipment, information technology hardware and software and human support systems. The purpose of this article is to inform colleagues who work in neuropsychology and rehabilitation fields of the practical and financial support that may now be available to those people who either return to or commence study in higher education while managing the consequences of a neurological impairment.

The article is available for download as PDF file at the IJTR website.
