Theme: The Multi-disciplinary Team (MDT)

Target audience: newer and less experienced Disability Officers and assessors, though this may be of interest to those with more experience who are working with students who have very complex needs.

Programme

This conference took a look at case histories for two students and introduced members of the Multi-Disciplinary Teams with an interactive discussion about the ways in which the various MDT members might contribute to the students' assessment of needs, design of support arrangements and on-going support.

Each case history was introduced by a Disability Officer outlining the kinds of issues which need to be addressed to support the students' needs and the appropriate multi-disciplinary team members which may include:

  • GP / Psychiatrist
  • Social Workers
  • Occupational Health Specialist
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Ergonomist
  • Psychologist/Psychotherapist/Community Psychiatric Nurse
  • Physiotherapist

2.45 - 3.45 Interactive Discussion about the ways in which the various MDT members might contribute to Student B's assessment of needs, design of support arrangements and on-going support.
  • (1) in a hospital for people with learning disabilities and (2) a community placement with a specialist drug treatment service.
  • what information is needed from whom to permit a fitness to practice assessment?
  • what support may Jake need for his on campus activities?
  • what support might he need to manage his first two placements
3.45 - 4.00 Refreshment Break
4.00 - 4.15 Final Plenary
  • questions on these particular hypothetical cases
  • general questions on the role / activities of any of the professions represented

Unfortunately, due to some circumstances outside of our control, we are no longer able to run this event in Leeds. The conference will still be running in London on Monday 16th November.
